Fire Safety Education: Know Thy Enemy and Know Thyself

During our Coffee Saturday last July 11, 2026, I highlighted the following:

"Fire safety isn't just a binder on a shelf—a set of rules in the resident handbook or a matter of compliance with local government regulations. Rather, it is a daily, proactive operation. In a vertical community, a fire in one unit threatens everyone, which means our strategy must combine strict mechanical maintenance with continuous and aggressive resident education."

The recent fire in a neighboring condominium building here in Eastwood City served as a wake-up call—a splash of cold water for everyone living in high-rise buildings. I closely monitored the incident from the moment the fire broke out, through the response efforts, and into the aftermath. I also followed the discussions and comments on news reports and social media.

One thing became very clear: there is a serious need for fire safety re-education. Many people hold misconceptions about fire, how it behaves, and how to respond to it properly. For our Eastwood Lafayette III community, I am personally committed to promoting this re-education—not only for our residents but also for our building staff.

As the famous quote by Sun Tzu says:

"Know Thy Enemy and Know Yourself..."

Let that be the guiding principle as we begin our journey on our Fire Safety Re-Education series with the first step: Knowing the Enemy...

Fire safety is not just about alarms, extinguishers, and emergency exits. Before we can understand how to prevent or fight a fire, we first need to understand what fire actually is and why it behaves the way it does. The more we understand the nature of fire, the better prepared we are to prevent it—or, if necessary, survive it.

In this Fire Safety Education series, we'll build that understanding one step at a time—from the basic science of fire to the practical methods used to prevent and extinguish it. By the end, you'll not only know what to do during a fire, but also why those actions work.
